India has renewed its urgent call for adopting an international treaty against terrorism, one it first proposed nearly 30 years ago. Addressing the United Nations General Assembly’s legal committee on Thursday, R. Mythili, a legal officer with India’s UN Mission, expressed deep concern over the growing strength of terrorist groups, which are now harnessing cutting-edge technologies like drones to enhance their capabilities. She emphasised the need for countries to overcome the current stalemate in finalising the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism.

Ms. Mythili condemned countries that justify terrorism for political reasons, which has previously defended certain groups as freedom fighters. She urged the international community to move past these divisions, warning that the global fight against terrorism is being weakened by such political agendas. India’s appeal for international unity comes in the wake of renewed global commitments to counter terrorism, following the adoption of the ‘Pact of the Future’ at last month’s UN Summit.
