The construction of the first hydroelectric power station in the United Arab Emirates and the region with a capacity of 250 megawatts is 94% complete, and it will be launched in the first quarter of 2025, the Dubai Media Office said.

“Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has announced that its pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant that it is implementing in Hatta is 94.15% complete, with generator installations currently under way in preparation for a trial operation in the first quarter of 2025,” the office said in a statement on Tuesday.

The kinetic energy of water flowing down a 1.2-kilometer subterranean tunnel will rotate the turbines, “converting mechanical energy into electrical energy, which can be delivered to DEWA’s grid within 90 seconds,” the statement added.

Investments in the project amount to about 1,4 billion Emirati dirhams ($386 million), the statement read.
