Poverty has struck Pakistan immensely and now the cash-strapped country’s national carrier – Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) – is on the verge of a shutdown.

In the last 10 days, PIA has cancelled more than 300 flights due to unavailability of fuel and the financial crisis.

A report by Dawn said a spokesman of PIA confirmed that Pakistan’s national carrier is inching closer to shutdown.

PIA crisis

PIA has been facing its worst crisis in history as Pakistan State Oil (PSO) has cut the fuel supply over unpaid dues.

This move has forced the national carrier to ground 322 flights, including 134 on international routes, since October 14.

As per the PIA spokesperson, on Tuesday, 51 flights, including 27 on domestic routes, were cancelled, leaving thousands of passengers in distress.

As per reports, the management of PIA has been unable to give them a tentative time of departure for flights, compelling them to look for seats on other airlines.

For the unversed, PIA, which was once a profitable entity and the pride of a nation, has been suffering losses to the tune of Rs 750 billion.
