India and the United Kingdom have officially resumed negotiations for a trade deal, marking a significant step towards strengthening economic ties between the two nations. The announcement was made by India’s Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal, and the UK’s Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Jonathan Reynolds, who is currently in Delhi.

The decision follows discussions held between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in November 2024. The two leaders emphasized the urgency of resuming negotiations and directed officials to work towards a balanced, mutually beneficial agreement.

India and the UK share a long-standing partnership, collaborating in key areas such as security and defense, emerging technologies, climate action, healthcare, education, research, green finance, and people-to-people ties. At the heart of these discussions is a shared commitment to driving economic growth and sustainable development.

Both nations have agreed to work towards a comprehensive trade pact that leverages their complementary economies and delivers benefits for businesses and consumers in both countries. Negotiators have been tasked with resolving outstanding issues to ensure a fair and equitable agreement that fosters shared prosperity.
