Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has said that the safety of citizens on roads is paramount. Addressing the 2nd edition of Tunneling India in New Delhi today, Mr Gadkari highlighted the need for cost-effective permanent solutions on roads against rainfall, landslides and floods.
Mr Gadkari also stated that the Government is working to make India a five trillion dollar economy. He also stressed on proven technology, economic viability, availability of raw materials and marketing of the finished product for success in projects.
Director General of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) Lieutenant General Raghu Srinivasan said that the opportunities for tunnelling in India are limitless. He stressed on collective need to hone the skills as tunnels have so many seminal advantages of providing all-weather connectivity, reducing distances ensuring that people are able to get through geologically fragile and climatically challenged areas.
During the conference, Mr Gadkari also unveiled the FICCI CRISIL knowledge report on Advancing Tunneling in India: Challenges, Priorities and Potential Solutions.
