More shelling has been reported on Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant yesterday. However, Ukraine and Russia blaming each other for the attack on the nuclear plant. Ukraine’s Energoatom agency said, the Zaporizhzhia complex was struck five times on Thursday, including near where radioactive materials are stored. On other hand, Russia’s TASS news agency reported that Russian-appointed officials said that Ukraine shelled the plant twice, disrupting a shift changeover.

The U.N. Security Council met yesterday to discuss the situation. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on both sides to halt all fighting near the nuclear plant. At the Security Council meeting, the United States backed the call for a demilitarised zone and urged the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to visit the site

In a statement, Mr. Guterres said that the facility must not be used as part of any military operation. He said, instead, an urgent agreement is needed at a technical level on a safe perimeter of demilitarisation to ensure the safety of the area.

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is situated near the front line of the fighting. It is held by Russian troops and operated by Ukrainian workers.
